The Story

Our restaurant’s story begins with one particular Bubba, Christopher Diebel, managing partner of the restaurant. The Diebel family moved to Des Moines from Texas in 1993. In the South, it is customary for the male siblings to adopt the nickname. Despite the geographic change, the moniker stuck. Today, only his family and a few close friends call him Bubba, but the term serves as a constant reminder of Diebel’s roots.

Another thing customary in the South is delicious food on the table for every meal. The restaurant is inspired by the finger-licking meals Christopher grew up with, and the menu grew to extend to every corner of the foodie South. The Bubba team is committed to bringing a little Dixie to Des Moines with classics like shrimp & grits, po’ boys, fried green tomatoes, meat loaf and fried chicken. Specializing in Southern favorites and classic cocktails, Bubba offers a menu that’s seldom seen in these parts but is sure to please everyone, – Yankees included.

Southern cuisine is cozy, accessible and feels like home. It is best consumed with family and great friends. When it came time to give a southern comfort food concept a name, Bubba just fit.

Artwork

A great meal or a classic cocktail tells a story, and so does the art on our walls. Bubba worked with Liz Lidgett Fine Art to source and commission original artwork for the restaurant from local Iowa and southern artists. Each piece, from lighting to murals, prints, paintings and even displayed clothing, has a connection to the owners or the restaurant. So if something catches your eye, ask about it! It’s all a part of the Bubba experience.

Parking

Diners can find metered street parking all around Bubba on 10th and Mulberry Streets as well as the adjacent streets (and it’s free on weekends and after 6pm!). Free parking is also available in the Wells Fargo garage at the southeast corner of 9th and Mulberry after 5pm and on weekends.
